In Agile software development, there is a thought process where it is possible to decompose an entire product or service into smaller components of value. A common term for each small unit of value is a user story, and an epic is relatively big user story that needs to be broken down into smaller parts. Each epic could potentially have many child user stories, all of which need to be completed in order for that epic to be complete. Identifying epics can be particularly helpful as part of strategic planning and roadmapping activities, where decision-making tends to fall on the relative priority of medium to large units of value.
